Erb’s Palsy & Mismanaged Childbirth Complications
Erb’s palsy is a condition characterized by paralysis in the shoulder, arm, and hand, caused by damage to the brachial plexus nerves. These nerves, which extend from the spinal cord, through the neck and shoulder, and down into the arm, hand, and fingers, can be damaged in a difficult or mismanaged delivery. If an infant’s neck and shoulders are moved forcefully or unnaturally, the brachial plexus nerves can be stretched or torn, causing Erb’s palsy. This condition may vary in severity depending on the extent of nerve damage, but there is no cure.
The following factors may increase the risk of Erb’s palsy:
- Large infant
- Gestational diabetes
- Shoulder dystocia
- Breech presentation
- Vacuum- or forceps-assisted delivery
- Improper or forceful maneuvering of an infant during delivery
